In this one time book club class, the students will listen to a story called, If You Find A Rock by Peggy Christian~Photographs by Barbara Hirsch Lember. The students are encouraged to come to class with one rock that they found in their yard or on a walk. We will read the story and make text to self connections and describe their type of rock. Is it a skipping rock? A chalk rock? A worry rock? A splashing rock? The students will use the story to develop reading comprehension. They will listen to the story read with fluency and expression with an experienced teacher.
Learning Goals
Students will develop reading comprehension. Students will make text to self connections during the reading. Students will listen to a story read with fluency and expression. Students will practice speaking and listening skills.

Hi! Welcome to my Outschool classroom.
My name is Betty Nilssen. 💕
I have a BS in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish from UW-Milwaukee. I am a first grade teacher, but I have also taught second, third and fourth grade, full inclusive classrooms. My passion for teaching reading while incorporating phonics, phonemic awareness, rhyming, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, science, social studies, math, drawing and writing helps children strengthen their academic skills while they gain academic confidence and a love of learning. Teaching reading is my super power.
However, I always incorporate math, writing, drawing, social studies and science into all of my lessons, as well.
I have three adult daughters and two of them are teachers. My mom was also an educator.
There are so many books to read, words and sentences to write, math equations to solve and fiction and non fiction pictures to draw. Let's get started!
