Class Experience

The re-theming of Disney Parks attractions is inevitable; even a beloved attraction may be re-themed! From Tower of Terror re-themed to Guardians of the Galaxy, from the inevitability of Splash Mountain having been announced to be re-themed to Princess and the Frog, re-theming of attractions is a part of Disney Parks ability to keep fresh, current, timely, while keeping its timelessness for all of its guests! We will be utilizing video's from "Imagineering in a Box" via Khan Academy/ YouTube.

Over the course of four weeks, students will choose a Disney Park attraction they want to re-theme. Once an attraction is selected, students will imagine the new theme for their attraction. From thematic development and conceptualization to storyboard submission, students will leave the class with a complete thematic design as part of their re-theming project.

Over the course of 4 weeks, students will:

Week 1: Select a CURRENT Disney Park attraction to re-theme and begin thinking about a new theme.
Week 2: Identify the new theme.
Week 3: Begin creating an attraction storyboard incorporating the new theme.
Week 4: Submit final storyboard with the new theme fully incorporated.

Students will demonstrate their learning through participation in the weekly classroom activities (no live meetings).

*The instructor will be available to help and will provide individual feedback throughout the course.

Lessons will consist of some or all of the following: We will be utilizing video's from "Imagineering in a Box" via Khan Academy/ YouTube. Additionally, other sources will also be encouraged to facilitate spotlight topics and student interaction as part of the attraction re-theme.

Parental Guidance
It needs to be advised that some Disney Park attractions depict racial and ethnic stereotypes in an inappropriate and politically incorrect manner. With that, a student may choose an attraction that has some inappropriate racial and ethnic depictions. This is where the re-theming process works, in that, students will remove such inappropriate depictions during the re-theming process. Lastly, re-themed attractions will not be allowed to include any inappropriate racial and/or ethnic depictions. Additionally, I am a California credentialed Social Science and Elementary teacher, having taught social studies, American History, and World History for 15 years to kids of all ages. History itself is filled with racism and prejudice. Additionally, my education background, with undergraduate studies in Political Science and Sociology, and, a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, I have substantial knowledge on race relations, systemic racism, and the sociological, psychological, and philosophical influences and effects portrayals and depictions have on the population. Thus, with my educational background and educator experience, I am qualified and competent to address sensitive and racist depictions to the public, with my specialized emphasis to school-age students.
