Rather Be Reading is a book club that meets once a week to discuss the week's reading assignments. Each week will begin with a review of the week's chapters and check the readers' comprehension of characters, plot, and other story elements. We will extend the reading through fun, engaging activities to make text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections. Rebecca Elliott is a graphic novel author who writes about Eva Wingdale in 'Owl Diaries' and Rainbow Tinseltail in 'Unicorn Diaries' daily activities in their personal diaries. The diaries follow these characters through their fun, everyday adventures with friends and school. In this class, we will read the first five Owl Diary books by Rebecca Elliott. Learners will need to read the week's book before class. The classes will start with a discussion about the week's reading, check learners' comprehension, and do individual or group activities related to the book such as games, illustrations, and creative writing through Nearpod. Learners will also have the opportunity to start their own diary and share some entries at the beginning of class if they wish. Week 1: Rebecca Elliott and Eva Wingdale introduction Week 2: Eva's Treetop Festival (Book 1) Extra activity: Learners can create their own comic-style diary inspired by Eva Wingdale to keep during the duration of the class. Week 3: Eva Sees a Ghost (Book 2) Week 4: A Woodland Wedding (Book 3) Week 5: Eva and the New Owl (Book 4) Week 6: Warm Hearts Day (Book 5)

I have been volunteering and teaching in brick-and-mortar schools since 2013, and teaching online since 2021. I love teaching language arts (especially reading and writing), math, world cultures, K-Pop, and I am a huge fan of Disney. I want to share my passion for learning with students who have similar interests! I hope to encourage a passion for learning, inspire ideas for new interests and hobbies, and provide unique learning experiences for each student.
My classes cater to small group settings, with six or fewer learners in each class. This small group setting provides more opportunities for teacher-learner and learner-learner interactions. I structure my classes and lessons to encourage student discussion and interaction. There are many chances to ask and answer questions. The discussion questions are usually open-ended to allow learners to think creatively about an answer and lead to more personalized discussions.
I studied, trained, and became certified to be an elementary K-5 school teacher in America, then traveled abroad to teach English in Asia. I taught ESL to Korean middle and high schoolers for four years and finished a 120-hour young learners and teenagers TEFL/TESOL certification. While living in Asia, I took the opportunity to visit many countries and learn about new places and study new languages. I have been studying Korean since September 2017.
I look forward to when I can travel again! But from the comfort of home, I love still being able to connect with students all over the world through Outschool’s online classes!
