40 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
This is a highly specialized class for the intermediate algebra student. This class will teach rate-of-work problems. An example of a rate-of-work problem would be: It takes 7 hours for Jon to plow a field, while Peter can plow the field in 5 hours. How long will it take them to plow the field if they work together? If you have two-or more step equation solving skills and understand fractions, then this class is for you. The class is structured by introducing the problem, writing it out on the white board, take the student, step-by-step, on how to tackle this type of problem. I will take turns with the students, showing them a worked example, then having them apply that worked example to another problem. There are a few variations to this problem and I will talk them through what the questions are asking and how to develop skills in order to complete a beginning-intermediate algebra investigation such as this. My teaching style is to show and explain, then tie that experience to another problem. I like to place the students in a position for success and then give them positive feedback for a job well done. My learners will interact with me by answering questions and a little "I say it, now you say it." The required experience and knowledge is having pre-algebra skills - such as- knowing and applying: Terms, solving multi-step equations, equations with fractions, combine like terms, and translating English into algebra. The conditions are that some basic algebra skills are needed. I really cannot go forward with these problems if the student does not understand solving equations and the elements of fractions used in solving equations. If you need those skills, please see some of my other classes.
Learning Goals
The Learning Goals are as such: The performance target is to score 80% or higher in the correct application of the skills. Students will be shown a rate-of-work problem and then, as a class, take turns describing, step-by-step, another problem very similar to the previous problem shown. This demonstrates the application and knowledge in understanding rate-of-work problems.
