Early Guided Reading Classes for Beginning Readers Rapid Reading Growth Part I

Some of the Common Core Standards that are addressed over a period of time in this class:

Print Concepts:
-Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
-Recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence (e.g., first word, capitalization, ending punctuation).

Phonological Awareness:
-Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
-Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in spoken single-syllable words.
-Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds (phonemes), including consonant blends.
-Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken single-syllable words.
-Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds (phonemes).

Phonics and Word Recognition:
-Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
-Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs.
-Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
-Know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds.

-Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
-Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
-Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
-Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.

Key Ideas and Details:
-Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
-Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas:
-Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.

You do not need to purchase any books for this class. Students will be reading books on screen. However, you will need to purchase magnetic letters for students to use for some of our word activities. Please see the link below the get an idea of the type of magnets you will need.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
 During a portion of the class, I will be sharing my screen so that children can watch phonics videos such as those on Youtube, HeidiSongs, and PhonicsGarden. Children are briefly watching these videos on my screen and you are not required to create an account for your children to watch these videos.
