US Grade 2
In each of the five sessions, the student will receive individualized instruction in activities that will include practice in the five components of literacy instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The instruction will be based on what is developmentally appropriate for a student in grades 3-5, with consideration of emotional, intellectual, and academic knowledge and growth. Additionally, the instruction is centered around the "I do/we do/you do/model." Each session will begin with a read-aloud and the five components of literacy will be incorporated into the lesson. A detailed description of how the five components will be integrated is listed below: Phonemic Awareness- Demonstrate an understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds. Phonics-Demonstrate and apply grade-level phonics in decoding words. Fluency- With prompting and support, demonstrate accuracy and rate while reading aloud. Vocabulary - With guidance and support, explore word meanings based on kindergarten reading and content. Comprehension- Retell familiar stories with an understanding of characters and key details of the text. In part, sessions will include: Reading a short decodable passage or book and working on the specific skill for the week. Paper and pencil work Writing Learning a few sight words Week 1- Skill- blending four-letter words/ Week 2- Skill- blending with "ck" sound Week 3- Skill- suffix "y" sound Week 4-Skill- twin consonant ending, "ll", "zz", "ss", "ff" Week 5-Skill- consonant diagraph ending "sh" This class is for older students who need additional practice in recognizing and decoding letter patterns in words.
Learning Goals
Using age-appropriate content, the student will learn to read, write, and spell based on the five components of literacy.

I am a former classroom teacher with 21 years of experience. Currently, I am a part-time reading assistant working in a first-grade classroom. I have a Master's Degree in Language and Literacy as well as a National Board Certification in Reading Studies. I also have a certificate from the North Carolina School Improvement Project. Teaching reading is a passion and I love to see students learn to read and to enjoy reading.
