Welcome back! We continue our study of the months of the Roman year with February, supposedly added to the old Roman calendar by King Numa. We'll learn what February festivals celebrated: ancestors, agriculture, purification, ovens, even fools! Especially we’ll learn about the raising by a wolf of Romulus, legendary founder of Rome, and his brother Remus. Varro wrote that spring began on February 7th with the blowing of the west wind, and Ovid’s Fasti describes in poetry the month’s important days. We'll also learn how the addition of February handled Leap Year. Near the end of February came the Terminalia, the last day of the old Roman year. Come join us to learn about this interesting Roman month! Class Picture: The Capitoline Wolf, date uncertain.
