Being a kid can be difficult, and it can be hard to figure out who you are and what you want out of life. Some kids will notice that they don't quite fit in with what people seem to expect of them. If you find yourself feeling like you don't quite fit into the gender people say you are, that's okay! Or, maybe you have a crush on a celebrity who is the same gender as you. Happens all the time! It seems like all those Disney movies want you to fall in love, but maybe romance just isn't...
I was an advisor for a high school LGBTQIA+ club, and we actually were the only school club to march in the New York City Pride Parade two years in a row! Most recently, I worked in a school that would not allow me to start a club to support LGBTQIA+ students (at least they wouldn't let me call it that). So instead, students and I came up with the idea of calling it the Anti-Bullying Club, which was a safe space for LGBTQIA+ students and allies to learn about and support each other, in addition to working to end bullying and promote respect. Most of my experience is with middle and high school, however, I love working with kids of all ages! I was a coordinator of an elementary after school program for social/emotional learning for grades 3-5. Additionally, I have experience working as an assistant teacher in a Montessori school for students age 3-7. I'd be thrilled to be able to foster a safe environment for kids to make friends and share their feelings!
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
All topics will be age-appropriate. We will only discuss relationships in the context of promoting respect for all people, being a supportive friend, and making wise decisions. This is *not* a sex education class, and no inappropriate content will be permitted. I also maintain completely open communication with parents and guardians, and hope you can pop into the group when you have a moment!
Most resources will come from GLSEN, a national education and support network for LGBTQIA+ students. http://live-glsen-website.pantheonsite.io/elementary-resources Other Resources Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) which provides resources for educators. https://www.tolerance.org/topics/gender-sexual-identity
