Class Experience

This is an ongoing weekly class specifically for older teen railfans!

Join us and showcase and discuss your railroad photography, trains, model railroading, and engage in other railroad-themed conversations. We meet all year long, so students can join the club at any time.

Bring along your pictures of locomotives, cars, tracks, stations, crew, equipment, model railroads, and even graffiti and hobo tagging. Whatever aspect of railroads interests you, we welcome it!

We're also excited to see railroad-themed art projects, books, and hear about your Roblox and Minecraft layouts, as well as other virtual railroading games!

Depending on student interest, we may incorporate hands-on projects, focus on specific themes, share fascinating railroad facts, and explore the preservation and restoration of railroading history.

No need for fancy equipment or special skills - just bring your enthusiasm for talking about trains, capturing train photos, and learning more about them. We welcome everyone, from beginners to experienced railroad photographers and railfans. Let's learn from each other and provide encouragement along the way!
Learning Goals
In this weekly club students will have the opportunity to share their work, receive encouraging feedback, and improve their photography skills and knowledge of trains and railroading... while making new friends who share a common interest!

Heather will facilitate positive discussions and guide socialization skills towards inclusion and kindness.

There will be weekly reminders of railroad safety and curtesy while railfanning.

Supply List
Students should bring their excitement about trains, as well as be ready to show 2-5 pictures they have taken of trains or railroad themed items.

For your first week in class, please bring a picture of your favorite locomotive or other railroad equipment (you don't have to be the one who took it) so we can get to know each other better!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I spent 11 years working for a historic railroad, as the director of one of few summer camps located at a working railroad, as well as offering tours, shop experiences, and planning special events and educational programs to help young railfans grow in skills related to their interest in trains... from hands-on experience restoring these amazing machines to small-scale models, as well as the history of the people who's lives were shaped by the railroad industry.

I also have many years of experience working to create a railfanning space that is safe and inclusive for neurodiverse young people (Autism, ADHD, and various other learning/processing differences.) I enjoy helping all my students share their interests and learn group social skills (like taking turns listening and sharing and finding a way to engage with other people's interests that differ from our own) and endeavor to foster a safe space where everyone has the opportunity to share, be heard, and participate in the way most comfortable and enjoyable for them. If you have any concerns about how your child might best be included in and enjoy this class, please don't hesitate to contact me!
