In this introduction to writing great research papers, the student will learn that a research paper is more than just simply stating facts. A true research paper presents and argues a thesis statement. So, instead of just giving facts, it has to interpret and evaluate a position. In order to do this, the writer has to be able to use facts, details, and opinions to prove a point. It is not: just a collection of facts, a summary of information on the topic, or merely reporting what others have said. So, how do we plan and write the paper? It all starts with the thesis. In this class, we discuss the key thesis statement, how and where to find the research sources, the format and the length of the paper, the importance of using paraphrasing and quoting your sources, and the difference between a bibliography and works cited sheet. Please have your learner print out the summary sheet posted in the classroom so they can follow along and ask questions. I teach in a relaxed manner. Class rules: We mute so we do not talk over each other, we are kind and respectful to everyone, and we raise our hands if we have a comment or question.
