Homework
1-2 hours per week. Finish the project started in class!Class Experience
Please note that while this course will be available for 12 weeks, content will be uploaded for only 8 weeks--I am providing an extra month of access as I know that students may need more time to complete their projects! All sewing will be demonstrated both on a machine and by hand. If your student needs help setting up their machine, please message me! Materials listed below are to make a 7'x9' quilt (large enough to easily cover a double bed.) If you want to make a larger or smaller quilt, make fewer blocks!) Week 1: Planning and cutting out patterns--cardboard squares/rectangles you will use to cut out your fabric! We will also design several different blocks for our quilts so we know what fabric we will need. Week 2: Measuring and cutting fabric--we will cut out all the squares and rectangles we will need for our quilt! Week 3: Assembling basic blocks (all pieces are the same size!). I will demonstrate hand-sewing a block as well as machine sewing a block. Week 4: Assembling blocks with different sized pieces (for example a long rectangle and some squares, etc.). Again, I will demonstrate both hand- and machine-sewing! In total, students will need 63 (12"x12") blocks of fabric! (about 16 of each block on average). Week 5: Sewing blocks together--students will combine the blocks they have made. It is easiest to make all of the rows, then sew the rows together. Make a short video sharing you putting your quilt together. Tell us what the hardest part of quilting is so far. Tell us the part you enjoy the most! Week 6: Sandwiching and basting/gluing your quilt. Today we will add the batting and backing to our quilt and baste it or glue it together. Vote: Glue or basting? Week 7: Quilting--this week we are actually quilting the 3 layers of our fabric together! I will show students a simple way to quilt Classroom question: How could you make this part of the process easier? Week 8: Binding--I will be doing a simple foldover (using the backing fabric to bind the quilt) to bind the quilt, but students are also welcome to use strips of fabric and bind it this way. Share a picture/video of your quilt when you've finished it, and look at other shared work and comment on it! Point out something they did a great job on!
