US Grade 9 - 12
In "Quick-Start Con-Lang," students will learn the foundational elements of creating their own fictional language, focusing on sound design, syllable structures, and word creation. The class covers phonetics (designing consonants and vowels), phonology (choosing syllable structures), and basic morphology (creating a list of three verbs, three nouns, and three adjectives). The class is structured into two interactive, 115-minute sessions. During the first session, students will explore the sounds of their language, using resources like the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to create consonants and vowels. In the second session, students will determine syllable structures and build a mini vocabulary, applying what they’ve learned to design functional and creative words. Both sessions will include a mix of short lectures, collaborative discussions, and hands-on activities. My teaching style is engaging and student-centered, using slides, demonstrations, and guided exercises to explain concepts clearly and spark creativity. Students will interact with me frequently through discussions, guided workshops, and direct feedback as they develop their language. I aim to foster a supportive environment where learners feel free to experiment and explore their ideas while gaining new skills in language design.
Learning Goals
Students will design a unique set of consonants and vowels for their constructed language using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
Students will create a range of possible syllable structures to give their language a distinct sound profile
