Class Experience

Beginner Level
There are hundreds of coding languages you can learn, from drag and drop languages like Scratch to web programming like JavaScript.  This course is to learn Python, one of the world's widely used coding languages.  

Python is easy to pick up as a beginner if you have coded before.  Python is a text based programming language that uses words, abbreviations, numbers, and symbols.   It is beneficial to have coding experience and feel comfortable typing. There is a lot of typing in Python.  

Teacher will model and guide students through each project.  It is beneficial for students to view teacher's screen as they code.  Students will need a PC or Laptop for class and they should feel comfortable opening and saving files.  Students should also be able to share screen for help.  

We will Code with Mu: a simple Python editor for beginner programmers.  Please download before class.  

*Students who want to continue learning can move to Level 2*

Week of 5/13/24 - Introduction to Python - open and save projects, discuss IDLE and Shell windows, and code a simple project.   
Week of 5/20/24 - Variables and Lists - used for storing all information to use later/Project - Mab Libs
Week of 6/3/24 - Making Decisions/Loopy Loops - coding the computer to make decisions for us/Project - Rock, paper, scissors 
Week of 6/17/24 - Project - Animal Quiz 
Week of 6/24/24 - Introduce Functions - shortcuts that make writing code easier/Project - Password Generator 
Week of 7/1/24  - Fixing Bugs - Fixing Bugs - understand how to correct errors/Project - Nine Lives
Week of 7/8/24 - Introduce Models - how to use built-in codes/Project - Robot Builder
Week of 7/22/24- Using Models Turtle /Project - Kaleido Spiral
Week of 7/29/24 - Review functions and loops/Project - Starry Night 
Week of 8/5/24 - Project - Mutant Rainbow

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Students will need a PC, Laptop, or Chromebook for class and should feel comfortable typing and understand how to save and open files. We will use Python 3.11 during class. This program is free and can be downloaded by using the python website. Students will have to download python before class. No personal information is needed for this class or program.

Hello! My name is Cynthia Burleigh. I live in Texas. I graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelor in Science in Information Systems. I started my career in a banking institute, but quickly realized I wanted to become a teacher. I have been working in education for 15 years, 3 years teaching with Outschool. I am Bilingual Certified - speak English and Spanish and teach Bilingual and ESL students. My teaching experience includes: Robotics, Codings, Spanish, Pre K - 3rd grade Bilingual instruction, Bilingual Reading Specialist, and STEM teacher. 

I love to teach Reading, Math, Spanish, Technology and STEM (including robotics). I love spending time with family, teaching, and running. A little fun fact about me...I run marathons for fun! I can't wait to see you in class.
