Welcome to Python Coding Camp for Beginners (Ages 13-18)! In this camp format class, we are going to work on learning Python from the very beginning with fun and interesting examples. From the very beginning steps into programming (the basics of Python) to more complicated programs, we will build up the skills to make our own programs and learn to code. Python is one of the world's most popular programming languages, used from exploring space to artificial intelligence and millions of things between. In the first part of the course course we are going to focus on five data structures and methods: variables, lists, loops, dictionaries, and conditional statements to code amazing programs. Each class in the camp will cover different topics, and scaffold skills so we are able to build more complex programs and think of new ways to solve coding challenges. Each class will introduce new fun ideas and games, activities and games to learn, build on, and reinforce concepts. We will cover the basics of programming, learn about variables, and ways to store and use information in lists, dictionaries, tuples, and other structures. We will also learn about conditional statements to sort data, and user input and loops. The course will focus on fun and interesting examples to help students understand concepts that can be applied elsewhere. Course modules will cover: Module 1: Introduction to Python We will talk about variables, and work on programs to explore variables, strings, integers, and floats. We will also build a dog age calculator and work on different ways to and print strings. Module 2: Lists We will do a deep dive into the world of lists and build programs that draw from lists including a changing story based on random selections from the contents of lists. Module 3: Loops Our first examination of for loops and the ways we can use them with variables and lists to make things run over and over again without needed extra lines of code. Module 4: Conditional Statements Conditional statements will let us sort though data, and we will use if/elif/else statements to sort through data, play a game against the computer, and organize our data by condition Module 5: Dictionaires Once we have covered the basics, we will work on the next data type in python, dictionaries. These let us store more complex kinds of data, and organize our code in key and value pairs. Module 6: Connected Data We are going to expand our knowledge of Python and using dictionaries, learn about live JSON data, connect and build programs that update with the weather, who is in space, meme creator, and more Module 7: Building a Text Based Adventure Game In this class we are going to work on setting up an adventure game using functions and start introducing the idea of non-linear code Module 8: Animation, Turtle, Text to Speech, and other Projects In our final class we will work on some of the things we can do with Python, explore packages, and build some really amazing programs Each session will include fun games, activities and programs we create together that we can explore as we code.
Learning Goals
By the end of the camp, students will learn the basics of programming in Python and be able to create simple pro In addition, students will learn how to create programs that store and manipulate data, and build programs that respond to various conditions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love teaching programming using fun and interesting examples because it helps students go farther than learning hard-to-contextualize concepts. Understanding what we are doing and why means that students will be able to apply algebraic concepts (like x + y) having understood examples like (red bike + blue bike) in a way that has context and meaning.
With a PhD in social network analytics and a background as an Professor of Data Analytics, I bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to my teaching. I have designed and delivered courses that integrate real-world applications with theoretical concepts, making learning both engaging and practical. My experience in business analytics, data science, and computer science allows me to present programming in a way that is accessible and relevant to students.
In my courses, I emphasize hands-on learning and real-world problem-solving. For example, I use Python to teach data manipulation and visualization, allowing students to see the immediate impact of their code. This approach not only makes learning more enjoyable but also demonstrates the practical utility of programming skills.
I aim to create a supportive and collaborative learning environment where students feel encouraged to explore, ask questions, and work together. By providing context and meaning to abstract concepts, I help students build a strong foundation in programming that they can apply in various fields, from business to science and beyond.
