Class Experience

In this class, students will learn all about editing their own writing. Editing is often a part of the writing process that is overlooked and needs to be explicitly taught, especially to our early writers. We will be engaging in discussion, acting as detectives, spotting errors, and applying our knowledge in our own writing samples towards the end of class. Students will learn the term "editing" and what that means and what it looks like to edit.

We will be discussing and exploring things that are important in our writing: starting our sentences with a capital letter, capitalizing proper nouns, leaving spaces between our words, spelling errors, and ending our sentences with proper punctuation. I will walk students through some examples and we will practice fixing them. Whenever your child is finished with their writing, they can refer back to their very own writer's checklist to edit their writing. I encourage your child to glue or hang this writer's checklist up in a special place in your home so that they can refer back to it anytime! I will scaffold for learners if needed and provide sentence starters when it is time to write. Students will be allowed to share their writing at the end of class if they would like to. Students should have knowledge of letter sounds and some conventions of writing (left to right). We will be using some inventive spelling strategies throughout class and I will encourage your child to write the sounds they hear! I hope to teach your child something new they might not know about writing, and encourage the use of a writer's checklist from here on out.
