Class Experience

Come and join us for an hour-long exploration into the Jewish holiday of Purim. Learn how a beauty contest led one young woman to save an entire people. Discover the religious observances and traditions associated with the holiday including the giving of food, dressing up in costume and partying until you drop. Find out what a man's ears have to do with anything and why they are considered to be so delicious. Join in on the fun by making a homemade noisemaker, a traditional craft project when learning about Purim, and find out why this is the holiday Jewish children wait all year for.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This is a secular class. We are studying the celebration of the Jewish holiday of Purim from an academic perspective. However, we will be touching on one of the reasons the holiday is celebrated (which some consider to be miraculous in nature) as well as indicate which of the observances are religious (commandments also known as Mitzvot) versus traditional in nature (dressing up in costume) as well as how they are completed. No student will be asked to identify or participate in any religious rights or activities.
Supply List
Students will work during class to create a noisemaker (Gragger/Ra-Ashan). This could be done using a variety of materials. Instructions for how to make the noisemakers (we will offer a couple of options) as well as required and suggested materials will be listed in the classroom space.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
