US Grade 8 - 11
In this one-time class, teens will learn proper usage of punctuation points (i.e., periods, exclamation points, and question marks), commas, semicolons, colons, and quotation marks. Additional grammar concepts, including independent and dependent clauses, will be taught as we discuss grammatical errors (e.g., comma splices and sentence sprawls) affected by incorrect use of punctuation. Through a combination of Power Point and screensharing, students will have punctuation rules explained to and demonstrated for them. They'll be shown several sample sentences and given opportunities to practice writing their own sentences (in the chat) while applying the punctuation concepts. They'll also practice correcting poorly punctuated sentences. Learners will be provided with detailed notes (a Word document attachment) that can be printed and used as a reference guide for their future writing.
Learning Goals
By the end of this class, learners will have developed a better understanding of how to properly use the most common punctuation marks.
