This high-level beginner Spanish class teaches children ages 5-8 how to read Spanish by sounding out the letter sounds in the same way an English-speaking student learns to read using phonics.

Class experience

This class is taught in Spanish.
The goal of this class is to teach children how to sound out Spanish words and read them aloud.

If a student takes each class in this on-going class at a Kindergarten level, he or she should be able to define "consonant" and "vowel," identify vowels in the alphabet, give the name and sound of each letter in English and in Spanish, sound out CVC or CVCV words phonetically, explain the purpose of accent marks in Spanish, identify which letter a word begins or ends with by hearing it spoken aloud, identify words on a page by finding beginning letter names, and read strings of shorter words together.

If a student takes each class in this on-going class at a first or second grade level, he or she should be able to do all of the above, plus my goal for them is to be able to read 80% of the easy readers without assistance to parents or other loved ones. They should have a solid reading foundation established which should be practiced and reinforced in the summer.

This is a vital step in a child's journey toward Spanish language proficiency! Both reading and writing in Spanish require this knowledge base.
RaShae Smith is a Texas certified educator in Spanish, art, and EC-6 with a bachelor's degree from Lubbock Christian University. She taught Spanish to young children at her in home preschool Libelula Spanish School for 5 years before moving to the online platform of Outschool. As a non-native speaker, she demonstrates to all of her students that Spanish classes work and anyone can learn a second language! She is raising her own 3 children to be bilingual and hopes they love Spanish as much as she does.
Students will need a printed and assembled copy of the easy reader book daily. This should be completed BEFORE class begins. Also, students need a pencil, eraser, and crayons or colored pencils are required for the writing portion. If you plan to attend regularly, you may want to purchase a primary ruled journal with picture story formatting. Any blank piece of paper will do too.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students should be supervised when cutting their easy reader Spanish books and using a stapler. Staplers are surprisingly hard for young children to use. I know my own young children need an adult to staple these books together, so I recommend the same for other parents.
Nuevo Silabario Hispanoamericano- personal copy NOT required to attend the class, just used as a guide in designing this class. Also, we use the books "My First Bilingual Little Readers Level A" and "25 Easy Bilingual Nonfiction Mini-Books: Easy-to-Read Reproducible Mini-Books", both by Scholastic. You could purchase each of these to avoid printing the printout each week, but by NO means is that required! I purchased my copies on Amazon.
