Intermediate - Advanced Level
In this class, each student will write two short stories, then select one to publish in an anthology of the class’s work! This is an excellent class for students who want to pursue careers in writing, as they’ll get to experience firsthand the process of writing, revising, editing, designing, and publishing their work. This class meets once weekly over the course of twelve weeks for approximately 45 minutes per session, and requires time outside of class for students to work on their stories. Each session has a general theme or genre that students will connect their story to, though this is fairly loose and open to interpretation. You can see the themes below! Students will be held to a high standard in this class-- we will not publish writing with grammatical or spelling errors, and we also have to enforce strict deadlines to ensure we can publish the book on time! Still, learners will absolutely be supported, encouraged, and celebrated for their writing. The class will also work together to title the book and design the book’s cover, though we endeavor to not treat either of these elements as a “competition” where one student wins— this is a group effort! After publication, the book will be available to purchase online in ebook or print format; each student will receive one copy in the format of their choice (included with tuition of this class). All proceeds from book sales will go to a secular reading-related charity that the class selects as a group.
Learning Goals
Students will publish a short story in a class anthology.
Students will gain professional writing experience.

Parental Guidance
Because this class culminates in a published book, learners and their adults will be required to sign contracts giving our organization, WordPlay Writing Co., permission to publish the student's work in the anthology and obligating WordPlay to donate any profits from the anthology to the class-selected charity.
This contract DOES NOT mean WordPlay will own or control your learner's work! This simply means the leaner has granted permission for WordPlay to publish the work in the final book. Your learner will still own the copyright to their story. If you have any concerns or hesitation about this, please reach out-- we're happy to help!
Please note that this also means student and adult contract information will need to be shared with the teacher, so contracts can be generated and final books can be mailed.
***Class Policies (for live classes):***
1) Students are required to have working cameras and microphones in class, positioned such that we can both see and hear them clearly for the entirety of class. Classes are a much more engaging, social, and safe experience this way. Please make sure your learners are prepared to have their camera on for our live sessions!
2) Classes with fewer than the minimum number of students required may be cancelled. I do my best to let parents know the day prior that this is a possibility! Because last minute signups are common, I try not to "officially" cancel until an hour before the class begins.
3) If no students have arrived in the classroom after ten minutes, I will exit the classroom. In some courses, rescheduling is possible, but in others I may need to offer a video or handout to catch students up on the class. Refunds are generally not offered for missed classes if a video is available.
4) I absolutely understand the need to wiggle, move, and get energy out-- but if that energy becomes disruptive, rude, or combative-- like spamming the chat, making threatening or rude gestures, holding things up to the camera repeatedly, etc-- students will generally be given a warning. If the behavior continues, they will be moved back to the waiting room. If the behavior still continues, they will be removed from class and will need to watch the video for the remainder of the information. All students deserve a supportive, focused, and pleasant learning environment!
5) Many of my classes involve writing homework that should be turned in 24 hours before the next class. If students do not turn in this homework, we will not be able to discuss their work during class, simply because no one will have had a chance to read it! Please help me encourage your students to post their work within the required time frame so they can get the most from our time together.
