What's included

4 live meetings
3 hrs 40 mins in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students will be given a learning opportunity outside of each class which will be discussed the next class or will contribute to their larger project. There are three learning opportunity assignments that will be assigned following week 1, 2, and 3's class. Learning Opportunities will total to 15% of the grade.
Projects
Students will complete a speech from brainstorming to delivery. We will work on a portion of this project each class in preparation of the final class session where students will deliver their speech. The final products of this project include an APA Formal speech outline, an extemporaneous speaking outline, and the delivery of the speech which will be graded for containing all parts of a speech, staying within the speaking timeframe, and for delivery skills. The speech and outlines will total to 55% of the course grade.
Mastery Evaluation
Students will be given points for reviewing public speeches of their peers in an ethical and encouraging manner. Students will also receive points for class participation in discussions each class. Points for reviews and participation will total to 30% of the grade.
Assessment
This is a points based course. Students will receive points which will reflect the effort they have put toward understanding the content, preparing for activities, and performing their newly learned skills. There are 100 points available in this class which can easily translate into grades for parents who choose to do that. (70-80 = C; 80-90 = B; 90-100 = A)

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
In this class, students will learn the parts of a speech, conduct an audience analysis, learn to write an APA formal outline and a extemporaneous speaking outline, discuss and practice delivery skills, and give an opportunity to deliver a speech.

Class will begin with a question of the day so everyone can get to know each other. It is important that students get to know each other in communication courses as public speaking is typically outside of one's comfort zone, so having an audience of encouraging friends is important. We will take time to see what our group already knows about the day's topic and what we need to spend more time on. We will brainstorm, write, and edit together. Practicing speeches will occur outside of class, but we will review recorded speeches. At the end of each class, students will get a to-do slide with a list of what they need to work on between classes.

My teaching style is to provide students with the opportunity to learn so they can teach each other and apply their knowledge. The best way to learn is to teach.

This course will involve light lecture, slides, video clips, group discussion, group writing and editing, and, if time allows, games. Students will need access to Word or Google Docs for writing outlines. It is recommended that students have a phone or tablet for playing games. No game IDs are necessary for blooket.

Learning Goals

By the end of this course, students will be able to design clear, organized, and engaging speeches.
By the end of this course, students will be able to appraise a public speech for clarity, organization, and engagement.
