4 live meetings
3 in-class hoursHomework
Students will be asked to spend some time outside of class researching facts about their pet. They will also be asked to spend some time outside of class to work on their final presentation.Assessment
Assessment is monitored through student participation, student self-reflection, and final presentation.Class Experience
Students will meet twice a week, over the course of two weeks. Students will receive the opportunity to meet students from all over the world, and share their pet/pets with these students in a fun & educational way! However, YOU DO NOT NEED TO HAVE YOUR OWN PET. You may enjoy the experience of meeting many different pets from all over and still researching your own animal of interest for the final presentation! Session Outline; Class one: Students will introduce themselves and their pets. They will then learn the basics of strong communication and presentation skills through interactive activities and student discourse with one another. Students will be asked and shown how to research facts after the class about their specific pet for the following lesson. Class two: Students will share the information that they have researched and explain how it relates to their pet at home. (For example, when I researched, "How do you know if your bunny is happy" I found out that bunnies "Binky" which is when they jump in the air and twist. I would then explain to students a time when I have seen this happen with my own bunny.) Students will then be given examples of many different ways they can present the information that they found (Visuals, Story-Telling, Song Writing, Posters, Etc.). Class three: Students will be asked to create a plan for how they want to present and choose one of the following examples that we discuss. They will talk about their ideas to the class, and the remainder of the students will have an opportunity to ask one another questions or give recommendations. They will spend this course learning strategies from the teacher about what strong presentations look and sound like. They will be given class time to physically work on their projects. At the end of this course they will create a goal for themselves (one thing they would like to work on for their final presentation, and one thing that they think they did well so far). After class, students will work on these goals and strengthen their presentations until they are ready for submission! Class four: Presentation day! Students will present their projects and use everything we learned about presenting thus far. After presentations, the other students get to practice giving "constructive feedback" and "personal strengths of the student/presentation". Students final assessment is a verbal self-reflection about how they think their presentation went. Each student will be given a kid-friendly rubric/check-list so they know exactly what they are looking for. **Once students have completed all four classes, the teacher will send parents a personalized certificate with the student's name on it!**
Learning Goals
Students will learn strategies and skills to help them with presentations, public-speaking, and communication. My goal is for your student to feel more comfortable with expressing information clearly to peers and teachers through an engaging topic. I am going to create a safe and educational learning environment where students can openly express themselves and learn some exciting new skills. They will also have the priceless opportunity to learn information from students and their pets from all over the world!
