Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, everyone! I'm Rhett, and I would love the chance to be one of your Outschool Instructors. From an early age, I've always found myself comfortable speaking or performing on stage to small or large groups. In high school, I competed on an elite Speech and Debate team specializing in political analysis, served as the student director for the community-access television station, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
I received my Bachelor's Degree in Communications from Mississippi State University, with dual concentrations in TV Broadcasting and Theater. I served as on-air talent for the on-campus news broadcast, performed in multiple theater productions, and was a member of Lab Rats Improv Comedy Troupe. After college, I moved to New York City for 2 years where I worked in communications and performed amateur stand up comedy. I am now back in Memphis, TN where I performed as an actor in the season 1 finale of Bluff City Law. I am also a musician and have performed live concerts at small and large venues throughout my life. My mom, Lizzy Spurlin, is an Outschool teacher as well.
My goal is to use my experiences to help students become not only effective public speakers, but confident ones. Public speaking and performance are often cited as one of many people's biggest fears. I believe I have the tools to teach students to mitigate this fear and develop their ideas into coherent messages for public presentation.
If the prospect of public speaking makes you anxious, I understand! But with the correct preparation and practice, the prospect becomes much less worrisome. I'd love to show you!
