Learners meet twice weekly for this 8-week course. On DAY 1, they (1) learn about a variety of formal or informal speeches, (2) select a topic and (3) prepare a short speech. Types of speeches include a demonstration speech, a personal introduction, storytelling, a book report, poetry, or persuasive speech. Speeches will typically be no more than five minutes. They can submit their outline or speech to me (the teacher) for feedback via email. Great speakers are prepared speakers. Their speeches always include (1) a clear introduction, (2) main points that support a topic, and (3) a strong conclusion with a call to action. Speech #1: Personal Narrative / Create an Outline Speech #2: Biography / Inspiration Speech #3: Demonstration Speech / Organize Your Speech Speech #4: Storytelling / Vocal Variety Speech #5: Research Your Topic / Report Speech #6: Persuade With Power / Share Your Opinion Speech #7: Motivational Speech Speech #8: Get To the Point / Impromptu Speaking We will also practice How To Say It / Communication, Listening, and Conversation Skills. On DAY 2, they will deliver speeches to the group. Learners need not memorize their speeches. They will receive positive feedback and encouragement to boost their speaking confidence. This 8-week course provides novice speakers with opportunities to gain confidence as they practice new skills and receive encouragement. Experienced speakers will have opportunities to receive evaluative feedback to sharpen their public speaking skills. *** In this class, students practice public speaking and conversation skills. This class is not designed to assist students with speech-related disorders. I want to create a welcoming environment for all of my students, but I do not have speech pathology certification or background. *** If your child enrolls in this class after the "start" date, you may want your child to attend my one-session class, "Create an Awesome OUTLINE for a Speech, Presentation, or Report." The outline is a tool students use every week to prepare a speech.
Learning Goals
Good speech organization is essential for anyone who wants to deliver a meaningful speech. Many students are nervous to speak in front of others because they do not feel equipped with skills to speak with confidence. This course provides students with opportunities to (1) organize their ideas for a speech in an orderly manner, (2) deliver a quality speech, and (3) give and receive positive speech feedback.
On DAY 1, they (1) learn about a variety of formal or informal speeches, (2) select a topic, and (3) prepare a short speech. Students can submit their outline or speech to the teacher for feedback via email. They will also practice nonverbal communication skills such as eye contact, posture, and use of gestures.
On DAY 2, students will deliver their speeches to the group. They need not memorize their speeches. They will learn how to give and receive positive feedback and encouragement. The primary purpose of the class is to empower students with public speaking and communication confidence.
