Learners are expected to research the topic in advance. This allows them more time to prepare as a team instead of having to use that time to gain an understanding of the topic.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 7
Advanced Level
In this advanced debate class, learners will be able to consistently practice their public speaking and debate skills in the Public Forum format. Learners will be given a topic to research prior to class. They should not prepare for a specific side as that will be assigned at the start of class. Learners will be randomly assigned a side and a team, then given time in a breakout room to prepare for the debate. Each learner will have at least one speaker role (opening, cross-examination, rebuttal, closing). After they've had time to prepare, the teams will come together and participate in a timed debate. Following the debate, the teacher will give feedback on the performance and provide guidance on ways to improve. Enrollment recommendations: - Note that is an Advanced class taught by coaches with collegiate level debate experience. Learners are expected to understand debate and the Public Forum format. If you learner does not have that experience yet, check out our Level 2 class. It is formatted the same, but specifically for debaters that are just learning how to compete. - It is also recommended that student take Intro to Debate and Argumentation Flex class to insure your learner has the foundational knowledge to be competitive in the class.
Learning Goals
To build upon earlier debate learning by:
- Showing an ability to come up with a 4 minute debate speech with limited preparation.
- Ask and answer questions in a crossfire setting that help to set up arguments against your opponent and defend your own arguments.
- Construct an argument that includes a claim, warrants, and impacts.
- Construct arguments that refute your opponents arguments by using the “ICE” Method
Identify the argument you are refuting.
Critique the argument (Explain what is wrong with the argument)
Evaluate why your argument is preferable to your opponents.
Incorporate feedback from weekly classes to improve over time.

Hello! I'm Elizabeth Green, founder of Green Communications and My Speech and Debate Coach.
I'm honored to lead a small group of teachers with a passion for helping kids learn how to communicate confidently and effectively in public speaking situations.
We all have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree with a focus on communications (Broadcast Journalism, Theater, Public Relations, etc). We have won numerous awards, competitions and national titles in public speaking and debate.
But most importantly, we know how it feels to be uncomfortable in a public speaking situation, and the importance of overcoming that. We all went through shy stages as children until we had that ONE teacher who impacted us in a way that propelled us to self-confidence, public speaking competitions, and even careers in communications!
Whether it's having the courage to stand up and spell an unknown word in a spelling bee, write and/or deliver compelling lines from a play, craft an effective impromptu speech, or seal the deal in a debate tournament with a persuasive closing round, our goal is to BE that teacher for your child.
And, have a lot of fun in the process. :)
