Description

Class Experience

Each week there are learning milestones, reflection, practice suggestions, and exercises. Students will be provided a written curriculum that lays out the expected milestones for the learner. Students are encouraged to keep a written journal for the reflection sections of the curriculum. Every week there are practice suggestions and exercises that will support the active learning and integration of the concepts and skills presented.  Here is an example of the Milestones and Reflection for Week 1: 

Assigned Videos:
"Diaphragmatic Breath" 			
"Think, Breathe, Speak"			

Learner Milestones
1. Exhibit diaphragmatic breath when speaking publicly 
2. Develop awareness of thought process when communicating
3. Demonstrate the ability to connect a Directive Thought to a Diaphragmatic Breath
4. Use the Think, Breathe, Speak technique in a public interaction to avoid fillers
5. Support the voice with a Diaphragmatic Breath		

Reflection	       
What kinds of breathwork have you done? Think of playing an instrument, singing,
meditating, swimming, scuba diving, yoga, weight-lifting, etc.  
Have you thought about breathwork for communicating out loud in everyday interactions or for presentations?
What do you think about exercising your breath? 
Are you willing to practice the diaphragmatic exercise introduced? 
How often are you conscious of your breath when you communicate? Is it only when it is NOT supporting you?  
Do you find yourself falling into the filler pattern of "Ums" and "Uhs"? 
What are your fillers?   
The course starts with independent homework. Students are required to access the online learning platform to watch the videos that are assigned before the scheduled virtual class session. The curriculum provides the expected milestones for the week, reflection prompts for the student and asks the student to practice exercises as an independent learner. The virtual class session is a group learning experience that integrates the week's topics of learning into discussion and an interactive workshop experience. 
Homework each week will consist of video watch time that ranges from 20-30 minutes with an expected hour of reflection and practice.

It is not required, but the learner is encouraged to keep a journal for written responses to the reflection portions of the curriculum.

The assessment of learner progress for this course is informal. Because this is a public speaking and presentation course, the student will be asked to practice the skill set in the virtual sessions and will be provided with feedback and response. The assessment of how a student is incorporating the skill set is done together with the instructor. The goal or outcome for the class is to promote the practice of self assessment and the capacity to adopt a new skill if the situation requires it.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Students will asked to go to humancommuniationstudio.com and access videos on the online learning platform.  Students will be provided access credentials to the online learning platform to view assigned videos for class preparation.
Students will be provided a written curriculum that will also be accessible on the website and printable if the student prefers to have a hard copy of the curriculum.
