Class Experience

Are you passionate about current events or other social topics? Do you find that you have an opinion about almost everything? In this course, learners will learn the process of debate, including roles, procedures and layout. Students will sharpen their public speaking skills through practice with one another, as well as engage in various types of debate. 

Learners will find their voice and learn how to respectfully and intelligently get their point across.  They will learn the tools needed to become more confident speakers and how to research hot topics.

The class schedule will be as follows:

Week 1: Introduction to Public Speaking and Debate
Weeks 2 & 3: Communication Skills - Verbal and Non-Verbal
                         Listen.  Speak clearly.  Use non-verbal cues.
Weeks 4-5: Debating 101 - We will focus on the below skills: 
                     Don’t drift.    Be confident.    Be relatable.  Prove your position.  Close strong.  Foster trust.
Week 6: Select Topics and begin research.
               Prepare.
Week  7: Begin our Presentations
Week  8: Complete Presentations

Learners will take turns selecting a topic, researching the topic, preparing their argument, and then presenting to their classmates. 

This is an inclusive class in which students of all abilities are welcome. If a student is unable to communicate verbally they are welcome to use the chat. If your student has any other needs that require accommodations please let me know and we will work develop a way for your learner to participate in a way that they are able.

Parental Guidance
Debate topics should be age appropriate and will be vetted by the educator.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Mrs. V is a homeschooling mom with a Bachelors in Human Resource Management and Communications.  I have worked with learners from Pre-Kindergarten, Elementary School, and Middle School. Language Arts for students in K- College, Elementary School Math, Elementary and Middle School Core Subjects, Spanish, and French.  The skills and abilities learned in working with learners of all ages will be integral in helping your student succeed.
