The overall topic in this course looks at the question "What makes each person unique?" We will take a look at the nature vs. nurture controversy, and discuss how our genetics and environment contribute to who we become. We will look at The Big Five personality types which are generally accepted as the most useful and reliable way of categorizing personality. Finally, we will discuss what the word "normal" means, and how we should interpret people's claims when they accuse someone of being "crazy." This is a one-time class, so if the discussion gets really "deep," we may not make it through every single subtopic.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Of all of the courses I took in college, psychology was one of my favorites. I ended up with a double major in psychology and chemistry because I just couldn't decide which one I liked best! I went on to become a teacher, and have spent the past 30 years teaching at multiple levels, including kindergarten, college, and everything in between. Not only do I know my psychology (I'm almost done with my PhD), but I know kids. Many psychology topics are not appropriate for younger students. Even high school psychology is generally only offered to juniors and seniors due to the mature nature of some of the content. This course gently circumvents anything that might be disturbing or troubling to a younger learner, and encourages them to embrace their differences during a time in their life when "fitting in" is so important.
