Calling all fans of Taylor Swift or learners interested in psychology! In this class, we will use Taylor Swift song lyrics to further our understanding of major psychological theories. Each week will have a psychological theme (see below). I will present scientific research related to each theme (see sources) and we will use examples of the lyrics of Taylor Swift songs demonstrate each concept. Week 1Lesson 1IdentityWe will learn about identity, self-esteem, the connection between happiness & relationships, and avoidant personality disorder. During each lesson we will analyze Taylor Swift lyrics I provide and we will work on thinking about these themes in lyrics learners provide.Week 2Lesson 2FriendshipWe will learn about the need to belong, a study about the connection between friendship & self-esteem, a study about loneliness & the brain, & how loneliness changes over time.Week 3Lesson 3Honor & IntegrityWe will discuss the personality trait honesty-humility, a study on lying behavior, & the connection between authenticity & happiness.Week 4Lesson 4RevengeWe will learn about rumination, the connection between negative mood & cognition, and a study on how people feel after taking revenge.Week 5Lesson 5DepressionWe will learn about major depressive disorder and a case study about depression & psychosis.Week 6Lesson 6Deception & SecretsWe will discuss a person's ability to detect a lie, narcissism, a study about the connection between narcissism & relationships, and how narcissism changes over time.Week 7Lesson 7DeathWe will learn about Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, terror management theory, and a study about fame.Week 8Lesson 8LoveWe will discuss social psychological theories of love and what leads to friendship & attraction.
