Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 10
Starting to study for the SAT English section in 8th or 9th or even 10th grade can feel *early.*..because it is! But the wonderful thing of starting so early is having the luxury of time. I have so many students who begin studying two months before they need to submit their scores to universities, and while they can absolutely improve their score in two months, leaving it to junior year means more stress and cramming.

In this PSAT English class, I will introduce students to the PSAT and the English skills which are tested. We will begin class with an overview of the question type, which will include how to approach the question and how to apply process of elimination. I will then walk students through one example question. After, I will share my screen with questions and give students 1min 30sec to answer each one on their own in the chat. After the allocated time, we will discuss the answer as a group. The questions will get progressively more challenging throughout the class.

IMPORTANT
The SAT has three main versions: PSAT 8/9 (given in eighth and ninth grade for practice), PSAT 10 (given in 10th grade to practice), PSAT 10/NMSQT (given in 10th grade to practice, but also has scholarship opportunities, and the SAT (sent to universities). All of these tests use the same questions, only the scoring differs, meaning the same question may appear on both the PSAT 8/9 and SAT. For the PSAT 8/9, that same question would be ranked as "medium" or "hard," but on the SAT, that same question would be ranked as "easy."

In this class, we'll use the materials for the PSAT 10. I've used this material with eighth and ninth graders in the past, and it's been accessible and challenging, so I welcome them to join this class. I also welcome tenth graders. For older students, I recommend my SAT on-going section.

*Please note: The SAT has two sections: English and Math. This class ONLY covers English and does NOT cover Math.

I graduated from university (twice!) with zero dollars of student debt.

Not having debt has allowed me to travel far, live freely, and take chances (like starting this very Outschool page), experiences I otherwise might not have been able to do.

There are several reasons why I was able to do this (like the fact that Florida state schools are *relatively* affordable). But a key reason was my SAT score.

My SAT score not only got me into a top five public university, it also got me a scholarship to go there.

When I was studying for the SAT, I had to rely on free, online materials, which were dry, confusing, and (oftentimes) unhelpful. That experience motivates me to create something different for my students: quality, accessible classes, which actually help them boost their score.

In my classes, I teach what I know: the English language. Two degrees in linguistics (BA, MA), a minor in literature, and my continuous love for the language has prepared me for teaching everything from the technical aspects of when to use a comma to the inferential aspects of how to interpret a text. My goal is to not only help students prepare effectively for the SAT, but to also help them build skills that they’ll use in university, and beyond.

Apart from SAT classes, I also offer PSAT preparation and literature coaching.

I hope to see you in one of my classes soon!
