Class Experience

It's often said that bad examples are the best teaching tools, and this is especially true for writing students. In this one time class, students will read an example of "bad" writing and then put their writing, English language, and critical thinking skills to the test to turn an error-filled sample into a better piece of writing.

Students will learn how to proofread a piece of writing for tone, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and clarity. Students will then put these edits into practice to rewrite a grammatically correct and tonally consistent piece of writing based on the model. If time allows, students will then brainstorm how to make creative changes, including changes to genre, setting, character description, and more!

Learners will receive a PDF of the sample pieces of writing before class. They will use this to practice editing and proofreading annotations.
Learning Goals
Students will learn some proofreading symbols as they edit and improve a sample piece of writing. Learners will also practice rephrasing passages and doing a full rewrite of an error-ridden piece of writing.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a professional academic and creative writing editor. I have worked on college admissions boards vetting application essays, edited papers for graduate and post-graduate researchers, and have taught Bibliography and humanities research courses. I am a very thorough editor with an eye for correct grammar, tonal and colloquial accuracy (using the correct tone based on the writing task), and fact checking. I focus on teaching students how to effectively edit their own work rather than simply telling them what to change.
