Prompt Writing and Essay Practice for Experienced IEW Students

In this academic 4-week class, students will practice writing 4, 5-paragraph essays using previously learned methods of the Institute of Excellence (IEW) from Unit 7 and also practice previously learned dress-ups to add writing style.

3 in-class hours
Homework
4+ hours per week. Homework is required and will be assigned weekly, including homework following Week 4. All homework assignments utilize a checklist, so both students and parents know just what to expect. Please post completed homework to me the DAY BEFORE class, so we can discuss the assignments in class and I can provide feedback/encouragement.
Assessment
Learners will be assessed using the checklist provided. No letter grades will be given.

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Intermediate - Advanced Level
This class is reserved for students who have already taken one of the following classes from Mrs. Hardman: Writing About Medieval Times using IEW Curriculum, Writing About Ancient History using IEW Curriculum, or Writing About US History using IEW Curriculum.

**Completion of Parts 1 AND 2 of the courses above (or the equivalent) is required.  Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.**

This course will revisit essay writing skills and checklists will be provided covering all dress-ups, decorations, and sentence openers previously learned in the courses listed above.

This class will be spent on review of structure, short games/activities for reinforcement of stylistic techniques, and reflection on writing strategies on how to "write from the brain".  

Students will be given a choice of several prompts each week from which to write their 4-5 paragraph essays. Note:  We will be writing a full essay per week.

All materials will be provided via PDF for outlining, writing concepts, and checklists.  No book purchase is necessary.
Learning Goals
Former IEW students will continue practice of writing 4-5 paragraph essays including introduction paragraphs, body paragraphs, and conclusion paragraphs.

Lesson 1:
People and Pets
 A general review of the essay format and students will pick from a selection of prompts about people and pets to write a full essay.

Memories
 Continued review of the essay format and dress-ups. Students will pick from a selection of memory prompts to write a full essay.

Lesson 3:
Traveling
 Continued review of the essay format, dress-ups, and sentence openers. Students will pick from a selection of past or future travel prompts for their weekly essay.

Free Choice
 Students will have free choice in their essays for the week based on a selection of new and past prompts along with a focus on figurative language.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
There may be times for homework when students will be required to retell their outline verbally to an adult. I'd love for your support in lending them an ear for this assignment! Please contact me with any questions as we go through this process. *Note: This curriculum, along with all curriculum I teach on Outschool is secular.
Pre-Requisites
Students should have experience in IEW methods and be familiar with the style, structure, and checklists from any of my previous thematic classes or the equivalent.
Supply List
Students will need access to a computer word processing system or Google Docs to complete assignments.
