Many teens get anxious about what they will do when they graduate from high school. College? Trade school? Employment? Something else? Students in this course may know what they want to do but aren’t sure how to make it happen. Which college/trade school? What job? Where? How? This course is designed in alignment with the "Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) student competencies. Students will learn how to create and evaluate SMART goals. Students will learn how to pose questions about their lives after high school and conduct research to determine answers to those questions. Students will learn how to identify and evaluate sources of information. Students will learn how to present their findings.
I have taught content for this class for the last 10 years. I have incorporated this class content into a larger English course during the last 3 years. I am excited to bring it to Outschool. I have more than 30 years teaching experience in public, private, and homeschool settings. I have state licenses in Curriculum Administration as well as Special Education K-12.
Homework Offered
Homework varies from week to week. The Time required for homework is unique to each student. Week 1: Creating potential SMART goals. Assessments Offered
Learners will be taught how to self-assess their progress. They will receive written and/or video feedback throughout the course. The project progress and completion is an assessment in and of itself.Grades Offered
Instructional materials are primarily teacher-created and will be provided. Links to instructional videos will be embedded in the Outschool platform. Students will need access to research materials such as access to the internet or library. They may wish to have a binder, notebook, index cards, and/or sticky notes to organize their research. Students may use digital apps and software to organize their research.
One tool we may use (pending Outschool approval) use is the O*NET Interest Profiler (https://www.mynextmove.org/explore/ip). No account is required to use this tool. Offline profilers will be used should O*Net fail to meet Outschool's student safety standards.
Students will be responsible for obtaining sources for research (internet, libraries, interviewing people) as much as possible. Instructional materials will be provided.
