Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening method that trains students to activate dance-specific muscles. Dancers have so much to do in a traditional ballet class! We have to remember combinations, think about port de bras and artistry, hold our alignment, engage the correct muscles, and do it all with a pleasant expression on our faces! In a PBT class these elements are isolated and simplified, made more challenging by use of the exercise ball, and repetitions are added to strengthen muscles. Classes will begin with a floor warm up that sets a foundation of mindfulness, breath, and body awareness. Then we’ll start working with exercise balls with our legs on the ball in a bridge position, seated on top of the ball, and standing with one leg on the ball. Elements of a traditional ballet class such as port de bras, tendu, fondu, and grand allegro are adapted to the ball, and specific conditioning exercises isolate hard-to-find muscles. We can add exercises for specific steps students might be working on like fouetté turns, grande jeté entrelacé, and beats. Class size is small and allows for individual corrections and modifications. I would love to hear what students are working on and help them reach their goals as part of a comprehensive dance education. This is a great supplement for a day when your studio doesn’t have classes, a terrific warm up before your usual classes, or as an extra workout during the day.
Learning Goals
Students will better understand and be able to activate key muscles such as the deep rotators, trapezius, back extensors, tensor fasciae latae and transverse abdominis. After 6-8 weeks, students should feel and see improvement in their strength, flexibility, and/or coordination.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students will need adequate space to move on their ball, a yoga mat, and bare feet, ballet shoes and socks. Risk of injury is very low if there is adequate space and if students move with care and caution.
Supply List
Students will need an exercise ball sized so that they can sit on top of it with their feet flat on the floor and their thighs parallel to the floor. These are available at many major retailers and sporting goods stores, and should cost around 15-20 dollars. Ball height guidelines: If dancer is under 4'8": 45 cm/18 inch ball 4'8" to 5'3": 55 cm/21 inch ball 5'4" to 5'10" 65 cm/25 inch ball 5'10" to 6'4" 75 cm/29 inch ball Balls need to be well inflated and firm. You will also need: A resistance band or theraband in light to medium weight, ideally at least 9 feet long. Form fitting clothes - a leotard and tights or leggings is great. Socks, ballet shoes and/or bare feet. Long hair should be in a braid, ponytail or Princess Leia buns - something that will let you lie comfortably on your back without neck strain. A yoga mat or carpeted floor. A barre, chair, counter, or railing.

I currently teach ballet, creative movement, modern dance, improvisation, choreography, and Progressing Ballet Technique to students ranging in ages from 3 to adult at Mass Ballet in Framingham, MA. I have almost 17 years of dance teaching experience in a variety of settings. I started my teaching career in 2003 working for the Topf Center for Dance Education in Boston where I traveled to multiple public schools and also taught in their studio program. I love teaching a wide range of ages - playing with preschoolers, sharing the joy of dance with older children, and engaging with teens and adults with more complexity. In spring 2020 I helped Mass Ballet make the transition to virtual classes on Zoom and also planned and directed our 6-week virtual summer program.
I am passionate about sharing the joy of movement and imagination, instilling ballet fundamentals though fun, and helping dance students understand their anatomy and how to work with their unique bodies. I believe dance education should build creativity, confidence, body awareness, and resilience.
When I'm not teaching dance I love to sew and knit.
