What's included
11 live meetings
9 hrs 10 mins in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. Approximately 30 or more minutes of creating and working in the animation app on the student's own time will be expected so that the learner may implement the tips and techniques presented in class, applying them to the class projects.Assessment
A short rubric of project standards is presented to help the learner and instructor evaluate goals being met and goals that need development.Grading
“Skill Drills” are step-by-step tutorials for us to practice tools and techniques. The outcomes of these drills are short, purposeful sequences (nothing very creative, just practice exercises). They’re not graded but they are a piece of your class rubric. They COUNT as evidence of effort. “Projects” are more complex. I will be assigning 2 projects. There will be specific briefs (requirements) for each and rubrics that go with the projects so that you can self-assess how your work either met, exceeded, or fell a bit short in certain areas. By default, you will be self-assessing your work and we can certainly chat about your views and compare them to my opinions of your assessment, ways to improve, etc. IF YOU NEED A FORMAL GRADE from me, please let me know today. If you have home-schooling requirements that demand a teacher’s grade, I’m happy to provide it, but I only do that upon request.Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Intermediate Level
For learners considering a future in creative arts & possibly animation, this project-based class offers a holistic approach to learning about animation fundamentals while using the industry's newest most powerful tool: Procreate Dreams. NOTE >>Learners must have these tools: An iPad, a compatible Apple pencil and the Procreate Dreams App. (Procreate Dreams is available from the Apple Store for a one-time cost of $19.99. It is a separate app from Procreate). This class is also a project-based class designed with the serious creative student in mind. The drills and lessons taught will be applied in two particular projects modeled by the teacher. Though learners will have certain creative liberties, it is to be expected that the projects will follow specific outlines and rubrics. This means that there will be common project goals that each learner is working toward over the course of the semester. The short rubric of project standards is presented to help the learner and instructor evaluate goals being met and goals that need development. Though creativity is always encouraged, the reason I, the instructor, reserve the right to set project parameters is to maintain a high standard of instruction, keeping a cohesive application of the lessons being implemented AND working toward an achievable, successful outcome. (It's a fancy way of saying: I make sure the goals are realistic because animation can get hairy and overwhelming and it's very important to me that I help learners stay focused and manage their time and energy efficiently.) We will work in Procreate Dreams, a 2D animation app, while we also learn some fundamentals of animation, some modern history of animation and a bit about animators who changed the face of the industry, as well as terms and techniques specific to the industry as well as learning and implementing specific tools of Procreate Dreams to animate. Learners will be guided through step-by-step lessons and techniques and guided through the process of creating two portfolio-worthy short animations as in-class projects. This class offers guided technical help learning the tools available in the Procreate Dreams App while also inspiring the creative aspect of storytelling through examples of animation styles and individual animators who have revolutionized and shaped the world of animation.

An award-winning designer and multimedia producer, I bring my professional background in multimedia production, broadcast and non-broadcast design and motion graphics to young creatives embarking on their own journeys in the realm of visual storytelling. Some industry recognition I have includes: BDA (Broadcast Designers Association) Gold Award, Graniteers TV Production Award, and was named on the Top 100 list of Multimedia Producers by AV Magazine. I studied animation at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. I was a freelance animator for Macromedia (back when they were called that). I have experience with Macromedia Director, Flash, Adobe After Effects and now, more recently and exclusively, Procreate. I have been an instructor on Outschool since March of 2020. Before teaching for Outschool, I had hosted local in-person art workshops for children grades 5-8, served as Adjunct Faculty teaching graphic design at the College level, and have taught art to children grades K-8 at a private elementary school.
