Description

Class Experience

WHAT SKILLS WILL LEARNERS DEVELOP? If they stick around, they'll gain familiarity and hopefully comfort with numerous art materials and techniques, which they can then put to use in whatever ways they wish in their own artwork!

I'll be sprinkling in art vocabulary & talking about art along the way - as a museum educator, I love facilitating conversation about artwork with kids! Looking at and discussing the work of ourselves and others (peers, or established artists) is an important skill to develop in tandem with art-making.
I'm a teaching artist and illustrator/bookmaker with more than two decades of experience working with kids of all ages, first in-person in NYC and then, since 2018, on Outschool! One of my favorite things about teaching is watching kids explore and make discoveries, and creating a space for them to do so. I've worked in schools, museums, private & homeschool groups, and libraries, facilitating kids' artmaking.
No homework as this is an ongoing class, but students are always welcome to post artwork in the classroom between sessions as a running art gallery!
I will post a detailed supply list with suggestions in the classroom, but we'll be working on materials rotations, as posted in the classroom. I'll post reminders before the start of each rotation, but to begin with, we'll be cycling through drawing materials, watercolors, oil pastels, paper/collage, sculpture (clay and other types of objects).
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Please be aware that children will be using scissors, and pipe cleaners or wire, all of which have pokey edges. I will obviously discuss safety with them but if you have concerns about your child's use of these materials, please stay nearby to offer assistance.

White glue and/or glue sticks are sticky. :)

Paint or other art materials may stain clothing or work surfaces. On weeks in which we may use messier art materials, you may wish to provide a table covering and/or smock at those times.
