Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
During group activities in this online class, learners will have the opportunity to engage with the teacher and their peers through verbal discussions and collaborative slides. These slides are designed to facilitate thinking and organization, and learners can either use the in-built annotation tools within Zoom or request a link to the Explain Everything board to write and draw directly on the slides. All learner contributions will be monitored by the teacher to ensure they are appropriate, safe, and accurate. A recording of the session will be preserved for learners to review later.

In addition to participating in live, synchronous class sessions, learners in this course will also have access to a variety of asynchronous assignments to complete on their own time. These may include independent practice exercises, written or video materials introducing new information, and preparation assignments to help learners get ready for upcoming class sessions. To provide even more opportunities for practice and reinforcement, learners will also be given access to the Prodigy math platform, which they can use for optional extra practice and skill-building.

Attendance is a crucial part of success in this class, so regular and consistent attendance is expected. While learners will not be removed from the class for missing group activity sessions, it is their responsibility to catch up on missed work by watching the recorded session and completing any associated assignments. The teacher will be available to provide assistance if learners have any difficulty with the material. By prioritizing attendance and staying on top of their work, learners can ensure they get the most out of the class and make the most progress in their learning.

The yearlong Arithmetic and Applications class sequence, of which this is the first module, is intended to serve as a foundation for the Junior High General Math module sequence starting with Area and Surface Area. The target audience is students who are entering junior high school and have a basic understanding of math concepts, but may need to strengthen certain skills. As well as sixth graders who want to maintain a slower pace of study and older learners who need the basics, this class is suitable for advanced or eager fourth and fifth graders. Students who have already completed and excelled in a comprehensive elementary math curriculum may find this class too easy.

Learning Goals

Learners will apply logic to situational problems.
Learners will find and represent information using two-way tables, Venn diagrams, and graphs.

Parental Guidance
CIMT, the Center for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching, provides free online downloadable math curriculum. For copyright reasons, I will direct learners to download a copy of certain materials, rather than upload a copy into the Outschool classroom. They will not need to provide any personal information, just click a single link to a pdf. GeoGebra Classroom is a free educational website that uses open-source dynamic geometry software to help learners explore mathematical concepts. The website allows teachers to view and monitor learners' work in real time, and learners can also choose to create accounts that allow them to save and access their work at a later time. To use the site, learners will need to provide a name or nickname, which the teacher can use to identify their work in the teacher interface. This information is only used for the purpose of tracking progress and is not shared with any third parties. Learners are welcome to use a pseudonym or nickname if they prefer to maintain their privacy. TeacherMade is an educational website designed for use in schools. It provides learners with access to a variety of worksheets, tutorials, and practice problems to help them learn and reinforce important concepts. To use the site, learners can either use their real names or choose to sign in with a pseudonym or nickname for added privacy. The website is designed to be safe and secure, and all learner information is kept confidential and only used for the purposes of tracking progress and providing personalized learning experiences. Explain Everything is a shared whiteboard platform that allows learners to collaborate and share their work in real time. It is similar to Google Jamboard, but offers more flexibility and customization options. To use the platform, learners do not need to create an account and can simply access the board through a unique link. If learners do not wish to write on the board, they do not need to access Explain Everything at all – learners can simply watch and participate in the discussion in Zoom. The platform is designed to be safe and secure, and all learner information is kept confidential. Prodigy is a gamified math practice webapp that learners can use to reinforce their math skills and knowledge. While using the app is not required, it is offered as an optional resource for learners who want to get extra practice or have fun with math. The app is designed to be safe and secure, and all learner information is kept confidential.
Pre-Requisites
Arithmetic and Applications is meant for beginning junior high level learners, including accelerated learners of upper-elementary age. It is an optional year between elementary math and Junior High General Math (pre-prealgebra).
Supply List
Scratch paper and pencils, or a whiteboard and markers.
For this class, learners can use GeoGebra exclusively as their graphing calculator. Learners with future plans involving taking exams like the SATs should consider getting and beginning to use a calculator approved for those exams as soon as possible.
