Class Experience

This course includes content that is considered core learning in middle and high school math courses, yet is often the first to be cut in schools. It is critical students learn the concepts of probability and statistics, as these topics are some of the most relevant topics in our daily lives. Below is an outline of the 12 lessons that make up this course:

Lesson 1- Theoritical & experimental probability; compound events and sample space
Lesson 2- Calculating probabilities & conditional probabilities using 2-way frequency tables
Lesson 3- Independent and dependent events
Lesson 4- Permutations & combinations
Lesson 5- Data displays: dot plots & histograms
Lesson 6- Mean, median, mode & range
Lesson 7-Quartiles, IQR and box plots
Lesson 8- Standard deviation
Lesson 9- Interpreting standard deviation
Lesson 10- Describing and comparing data sets; skew
Lesson 11- Scatter plots, correlation and causation
Lesson 12- Equations of regression lines

I value student thinking in my classes and continually engage students in the sharing of ideas and working problems. I believe the best learning occurs when students experience productive struggle--having time to make sense of an idea, sharing or hearing others share thinking, then having big ideas brought forward and made clear by the teacher. While I expect deep thinking, I don't want my learners to be in a confused state for long.

My classes are interactive with ideas presented in short lessons, followed by tasks that provide practice, discussion and immediate feedback. I love how digital learning can make use of multiple digital tools that can be fun and provide immediate feedback.

I strongly believe that for students to truly learn, they must practice. Registration for my courses include a subscription to a program for completing homework. Students receive immediate feedback on their progress, and the instructor is also able to monitor their progress.

Students will be assessed at the end of the course and parents will be given feedback on their child's attainment of the course objectives.

This course fits nicely in my year-long offerings of Algebra 1 Semester 1, Probability & Statistics, Algebra 2 Semester 2 and is also appropriate for students interested in it as a stand-alone course.

Learning Goals

Students will gain conceptual understanding of the main ideas of probability and statistics to interpret information presented to them and make informed judgements or decisions.

Other Details

Supply List
Students will receive a subscription to a proprietary program for completing homework. The subscription will last throughout the course and continue for those who enroll in future courses with me.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Brian Jacobson has been a high school math teacher for 30 years. He has a M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction, BS in Mathematics, BA in Computer Science, is endorsed as a public secondary math teacher and is National Board Certified. Brian has taught all mathematics courses from Algebra 1 through Calculus and Statistics throughout his career and is passionate about teaching and student learning.
Brian believes in developing mathematical thinking and knows that deep thinking will lead to learning that sticks. Students in his classes routinely share their thinking with partners or in small groups, then as a larger learning community, big ideas are clarified so students are not left in a confused state for very long. As an educator, Brian has been a life-long learner and continually adapts his approaches to reflect best practices in teaching and learning. It is important that his students complete his classes with strong conceptual understanding on which future learning can build, procedural fluency, and an ability to apply learning to recognize, formulate and solve problems encountered in the real world.
