One-on-one ukulele lessons are an opportunity to provide individual instruction based on learners' ability and interest. Learners will develop proper ukulele technique and absorb basics of music theory by learning songs of their choice, or by working on songwriting using new chords and techniques. At the heart of every lesson is a desire to foster our inherent human joy in creating music; everything else is just a tool to get a song out of your learner’s head and into their fingers! Beginners welcome; these lessons may include learning parts of the ukulele, how to tune the ukulele, and simple chords, songs, and strumming patterns. For intermediate/advanced players, techniques might include: major, minor, diminished, augmented, and suspended triads; four-part chords including chord extensions; strumming and picking patterns in all time signatures; solos and riffs; instrumental/fingerstyle/chord-melody arrangements; lyric, melody, and harmony writing; fretted instrument techniques such as hammer-ons and pull-offs, tremolo, etc. We learn these techniques by working on songs of the learner's choice- this can be anything from Taylor Swift to Encanto to Bollywood to Guns n Roses! Through study of ear training and contemporary music theory I am adept at both preparing pieces and learning requested songs on the fly, translating them into accessible pieces for students.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from Berklee College of Music
Hello! I'm Charissa and I'm passionate about ukulele and making the instrument accessible to my students. I was the first ukulele principal to be accepted to Berklee College of Music, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2021. I have been teaching since 2014 and teaching virtually since 2017. I've taught dozens of students of all ages and abilities, in-person in schools and music studios and online across five time zones. I've also led camps and workshops across the U.S. My philosophy is to put the student's growth first- pushing them to try new things without overwhelming them, encouraging them as they build performance and discipline skills, and most importantly, helping them to find joy in music of any genre.
