This ongoing course is perfect for beginner or intermediate piano players! Any students between the ages of 4 and 16 can register. Since students will learn in a one-on-one environment, it's easy to tailor each weekly lesson for individual students. I am a friendly, laid-back teacher whose main goal is for my students to get excited about learning music. I love to individualize each lesson and help my students learn the kind of music that they like to play. If the time on the schedule doesn't work for you, please contact me and we can try to find a time that works. During the first lesson I will assess the student's amount of musical knowledge and most likely piano books or digital music will need to be purchased. Preschool students will use the Wunderkeys Preschool curriculum. Lessons will focus on the following areas: Beginners: * note reading in any hand position * intervals * how to identify the notes on the keys * reading note movement on the staff * how to play simple songs by reading music and note movement together * beginning chords * anything else that the student wants to learn! Intermediate Players: * strengthening note reading on and off of the staff * intervals (2nds, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, 7ths and octaves) * scales * learning key signatures * major/minor chords * playing more advanced songs depending on the student's preferences * how to play lead sheets * improvisation * composing After each weekly lesson, students are encouraged to practice for 30-60 minutes outside of class time. Students who practice longer will progress more quickly! A piano or keyboard is required for this course (a full-size keyboard is preferred, but a smaller keyboard may be used initially).

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Julie Schmidt and I have 16 years of experience teaching individual and group piano lessons. Also, I have been playing and studying the piano for 35 years while earning a MS in Education. Music is definitely my passion. My favorite part of teaching the piano is finding out what kind of music motivates my students. Some of my students like reading the notes on the staff, playing classical music, and not straying far from the printed notes. Other students play more by ear and love to improvise! I always have a few students who want to be able to play songs quickly - I teach them chords and leadsheets so they can progress faster. I like to tailor my lessons to get a student excited about playing the piano. I use a variety of books, digital music, and resources to keep my lessons new and motivate my students to practice.
I have a laid-back teaching style and love to have fun during lessons. We will play games, improvise, compose, learn chords, and study different musical periods and composers. I really enjoy it when students bring their own music to lessons because I know that they are motivated to learn it!
Along with piano I have also earned a degree in Dietetics, owned a baking business, homeschooled my 3 children for a few years, taught in the public school, and taught Sunday School to middle schoolers. Luckily I did not do all of these things at the same time! I love reading, baking, line dancing, and attending concerts.
