The goals of this course will be learner-dependent and individually tailored, but, for a beginner, are likely to include the following: Learn the basics of music theory: This includes understanding rhythm, pitch, and melody. Students will learn how to read music notation and identify different musical elements. Develop ear training skills: This means being able to identify different pitches and rhythms by ear. Students will practice singing and clapping along to music, and they will also learn how to use simple ear training exercises. Learn how to sing, clap, and play basic percussion instruments: This includes learning how to use their voices, their hands, and their bodies to make music. Students will learn a variety of songs. Perform simple songs and instrumental pieces: This will give students the opportunity to share their musical skills with others. They will perform for their classmates, their families, and even for the public. Build confidence and self-esteem in their musical abilities: This is the ultimate goal of any music class. Students will feel good about themselves and their musical abilities as they learn and grow.
I began formally studying music with piano and orchestral percussion at the age of 9. In high school, I performed in both regional and all-state honor bands and choirs. I attended TN's Governor's School for the Performing Arts and Sewanee Summer Music Center. I graduated with a degree in music from Berklee College of Music in 2002. I have more than 20 years of experience performing and teaching music. I have a strong background in both percussion and voice, and I am experienced in teaching students of all ages and abilities. I believe that everyone can learn to play music, and I enjoy helping students reach their full potential. I am a patient and encouraging teacher, and I always strive to create a fun and positive learning environment. I am also a strong advocate for using technology in the classroom, and I am always looking for new ways to make music education more engaging and interactive. If you are looking for a music teacher who is passionate, experienced, and dedicated to helping you reach your goals, then I would be honored to work with you.
