In this one-on-one session, singers will receive help in any area they wish. A typical lesson consists of vocal technique (warm-ups) and repertoire (song) work. If students desire to learn sight reading and ear training, we will work on this skill as well (no experience is necessary). If the student has a particular song they need help learning, we will work on notes, rhythm, musicality or performance aspects.
Some topics that may be covered are: -Vocal Technique to keep you from developing bad habits such as straining -Song selection to make sure you are singing the the perfect song for your age and range -Foreign Language diction (did you know that a very popular American musical, South Pacific, features french sung by the young Ngana and Jerome?) -Breathing Technique to make sure you an sing through lines without running out of breath! -Performance and Acting work to help you tell your story to the audience -Audition Preparation to make sure you are as ready as can be! -Sight Reading to help you learn music quickly and identify everything in the music -Ear Training to help you recognize intervals and pitches -Rhythm to help keep a steady tempo while you sing!
A professional performer and voice teacher with 20 years of experience in musical theater and opera, I have worked with singers of all ages and skill levels. While some students have been brand new to singing with no experience, others have gone on to win conservatory scholarships and Broadway auditions. As a teaching artist for the Lyric Opera of Chicago, I have extensive experience working with students of a variety of skill and age levels. Sarah has performed as a soloist both nationally and internationally and enjoys nurturing young performers who are at the beginning of their musical journey!
We will work to develop an appropriate practice routine together based on the goals, age, and skill level of the student.
Students who take ongoing lessons will be asked to purchase music books based on their interest.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
For students who take ongoing lessons, quarterly progress reports are taken and discussed with the student.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
