US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Students will create their own Learning Log with reference student will read from these lists and build their skills by becoming word detectives, analyzing the words using the phonograms and spelling rules to define how to spell and read them. The best of children's literature will be used to engage each student's imagination with fresh ideas and beautiful artwork. Students will start each lesson with this bit of literature, then move to a phonogram drill or quiz; next, we will dictate either words onto a reference page, or ten words from the current spelling list. Finally, we will play a game or practice applying the knowledge while sounding out words in Whizzimo (screenshared). I also like to ask the students if they can tell me what they learned at the end with no pressure. My style is direct, but friendly and helpful.
Learning Goals
Students will work through the Wise Guide for Spelling, building their own spelling journal as they see, hear, write and say each phonogram as it is dictated to them by the teacher. Then they write these same words neatly into their spelling journal. Each word is broken down by syllable and phonogram. Spelling markings are applied, and relevant spelling rules are reviewed or noted as we work through the lists together. Occasionally, we add a new reference chart, such as personal pronouns, prefixes, suffixes, days of the week, numbers, etc. Topics covered will be vowels, consonants, phonograms, spelling rules, sentence structure, affixes, nouns, pronouns, verbs, and more.

Teacher expertise and credentials
For ten years I taught this program with my two homeschooled children, who have excelled academically and are independent and pursuing careers in the military and marketing. For four years, I was a been a teacher in a charter school where I taught English, Speech, and Theater for two years. Then, after seeing fantastic progress using SWR in my privately tutored elementary students, I asked to become a reading interventionist. My principal moved me into this position where, over the next two school years, I helped both elementary and middle school students improve their skills. Since 2019, I have been tutoring online full-time. Many of my students have advanced multiple grade levels in reading skills in two to three months. Often they move on to focusing on writing and grammar lessons and several have earned academic awards and scholarships at their schools.
