Class Experience

The goal of this class is to provide girls who struggle to meet and connect with their peers an opportunity to talk about social skills that may be beneficial to them in an atmosphere that is safe, relaxed, and supportive. Each class will begin with a discussion on a specific topic such as: identifying and managing stress, meeting new people, practicing positive self-talk, and regulating self-doubt. Comments and questions are welcome so that we may identify the student's concerns, skills, and strengths as well as establish strategies to increase her level of comfort in social situations. I will encourage and support dialogue that is open, honest, and beneficial to the discussion.

There will also be time allotted for "free talk" with prompts to get a conversation started. Topics may include: movies they've seen recently, future plans, favorite hobbies, etc. I will assist her in a discussion that is relaxed and informal which serves as practice for conversational skills as well as creating an overall sense of comfort in the class. As this is a "safe space", I do not want students to feel pressured to speak, but as their confidence grows, be able to engage more freely in social situations.

This class is available:
1)  As a stand-alone class;
2)  As a precursor for the Shy Girls' Social Group, allowing the student to gradually become comfortable with the class format;
3) On a weekly or bimonthly basis.

I have ample experience and am happy to work with students who may struggle with mutism, shyness, and social anxiety. As this is an inclusive class, all girls are welcome. If your student has special abilities or requires accommodations, please let me know.

I am a former therapist who has worked with children, adolescents, and teenagers in individual and group therapy settings. I began my mental health career employed with a psychiatric hospital before I left to counsel children and their families in a nonprofit community-based program. I then became the on-site Director of an Independent Living Program which assisted teenagers and young adults transitioning into independence. Along with counseling, we provided training for healthy coping skills and life skills. As someone who has struggled with shyness and feeling awkward in social situations since childhood, I can relate to others who find social situations stressful or attempt to avoid approaching new people or situations. I also understand the importance of a sense of community and connecting with peers who can empathize with your struggles.
