Assessment
The learner will be assessed in the first two sessions and reassessment will take place every 6-12 months to ensure adequate progress is being made.Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 5
I will carefully structure each lesson to meet the individual needs of your child, directly teaching the specific skills the child needs to be successful in reading, spelling, or math. I will review skills, as needed, so that the child can gain a solid foundation and understanding of the material presented. Each lesson will follow the same format, helping the child to feel secure and gain confidence. In each lesson, there will be a warm-up, a review of skills previously taught, and a new skill introduced and practiced. During the first two sessions, I will informally assess the student. That information will then be used to create a program that is tailored to their specific needs. The program will be multi-sensory, so visual, auditory, and kinesthetic approaches will be employed simultaneously throughout each lesson. For example, information will be presented visually and auditorily, but I will also demonstrate and incorporate table writing, arm tapping, sky writing, finger spelling, the use of manipulatives and many other interactive modes of learning. I will implement the "I do, we do, you do" teaching method in each lesson to ensure understanding. Parental feedback is welcome and changes to lesson content and format can be easily made upon parent request. Possible Reading and Spelling lesson topics may include: phonemic awareness: rhyming, onset rime, segmenting, blending, adding, deleting and substituting short and long vowels discrimination between vowel sounds blends digraphs Floss Rule -ng and -nk word families soft c and g short vowel protectors -ck, -tch and -dge contractions Vowel-R combinations Vowel Team combinations syllable patterns: Closed, Open, Magic E, Bossy R, Vowel Teams and Consonant L-E syllable division rules spelling rules: Doubling Rule, E Drop Rule, Y Change Rule prefixes suffixes base words vs. root words connectives parts of speech understanding terms such as "infer," "summary," "theme," "conclude," "illustrate" understanding point of view understanding use of quotation marks Possible Math topics include: patterns counting subitizing number sense determining more than and less than mental math place value addition strategies skip counting understanding symmetry understanding terms like "sum," "difference," "product," and "quotient" converting units of length multiplication practice money telling time subtraction division graphing reading graphs, charts, and line plots measurement converting measures geometry angles volume fractions mixed numbers exponents decimals Order of Operations (PEMDAS) story problems
