Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 12
⭐️ I typically work with parents to schedule days and times that work best for both of our schedules. Please message me to coordinate new class times! ⭐️

As a middle and high school English teacher, I love being able to work with students one-on-one to identify areas of improvement and practice those skills that will help students be more confident and proficient readers and writers. Each class will be personalized for the student. For example, if a student needs help writing an essay, I can guide that student by helping with any of the following areas: breaking down the writing prompt, brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. On the other hand, if a student needs help with reading comprehension, we can review a reading passage and practice reading techniques that will help improve understanding and knowledge. I am also experienced with helping students to refine vocabulary and grammar skills.

I just ask that after you sign up your child for my class, please send me a message with the completed Needs Assessment (sent to you via email after enrollment). That way, you can let me know what your child needs help with so that I can prepare appropriately. I also ask that students come prepared for class with materials such as an essay prompt, rough draft, challenging reading passage, vocabulary word list, a graded grammar test, etc. I can certainly supplement additional materials to help students if relevant.

Here is a sample Class Breakdown for our first class together (keep in mind each class will be personalized):
0-5 minutes: Introductions; review the Needs Assessment
5-15 minutes: Goal Setting -- establish two main goals
15-25 minutes: Practice Goal 1
25-35 minutes: Practice Goal 2
35-40 minutes: Summarize class, Complete Progress Report

Learning Goals

By the end of class, students will be able to define their learning goal and explain one way in which they improved in that area of need.

***I am currently on maternity leave. Please send me a message if you are interested in scheduling summer tutoring sessions. Thank you!***

Ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I now have ten years of professional teaching experience of children ages 5 through 18. I have also attained teaching certificates from four different states (CA, AZ, FL, and TN), my bachelor’s degree in English and Education from the University of San Diego, and my master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Grand Canyon University. One of my favorite educational experiences was studying literature and writing for a semester at Florence University of the Arts in Florence, Italy. I am a lifelong learner and believe all students can learn.

I teach a variety of English classes. My experience working with children as a full-time English teacher in grades 6-12 enable me to pinpoint areas in which students may need extra practice. Examples of this include: using context clues to define a difficult vocabulary word in a text, outlining for essay writing, note taking for research assignments, writing an engaging and effective conclusion paragraph, and much more. My experience with one-on-one tutoring (both in-person and online), teaching English as a Second Language, and part-time teaching experience in grades pre-K through 8 have also helped me become a more well-rounded and compassionate teacher.

I am a wife to a Navy pilot and a mom of two with another on the way. My family and I enjoy hiking, cooking, and traveling together. I look forward to meeting my future students and learning together!
