Private Tutoring for a Variety of Reading & Writing Skills

In this 4 week course, students will learn a variety of reading skills; summarizing, main idea, story elements, author's purpose and will focus on a new writing skill each week; descriptive writing, focus traits, elaboration and dialogue.

Class Experience

Each week, we will read an anchor text, informational text and leveled reader each week.  There will be opportunities for student discussion in various formats as well as engaging vocabulary games.  This class will include a high amount of participation.  We will end the week answering the essential question in RACE format (Restate, Answer, Cite Evidence and Explain).  This form of analyzing and answering questions will aid students on standard state testing.  

Week 1 Community & Education
Essential Question: How is learning at school different from learning from home?
Anchor Text:  A Fine, Fine School (humorous fiction) & One-Room Schoolhouses (informational text)
Target Skill:  Story Structure and Analyze Illustrations, Target Strategy:  Summarize, Vocabulary Strategy:  Context Clues
Writing:  Narrative Writing; Descriptive Paragraph, Focus Trait Elaboration

Week 2  Civics and The Court System
Essential Question: Why are courts an important part of our government?
Anchor Text:  The Trial of Cardigan Jones (fantasy) & You Be the Jury (informational text)
Target Skill: Conclusions and Author’s Word Choice, Target Strategy: Infer and Predict, Vocabulary Strategy: Dictionary and Glossary
Writing: Informational Writing

Week 3 Community and Volunteers
Essential Question: Why is volunteering good for a community and its people?
Anchor Text: Destiny’s Gift (realistic fiction) and Kids Making a Difference (informational text)
Target Skill: Understanding Characters and Story Message, Target Strategy: Analyze and Evaluate, Vocabulary Strategy:  Antonyms
Writing: Fantasy, Focus Trait Development

Week 4 Physical Science and Engineering
Essential Question: Why is everyone’s role on a project important?
Anchor Text: Pop’s Bridge (historical fiction) and Bridges (informational text)
Target Skill: Compare/Contrast and Story Structure, Target Strategy: Infer and Predict, Vocabulary Strategy: Word Families
Writing: Opinion

The content will be taught using 3rd grade materials, but differentiation will be provided to student just below or above grade level.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their reading skills and apply reading strategies to assist in answering essential weekly questions.  Students will also apply skills, focusing on a different writing genre.
