Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 11
This private tutoring class is designed so that you can get personalized writing support on a weekly basis or by dropping in as needed. Each class meeting has the option of submitting the teacher's instructions and/or writing prompt for a school assignment, or I will happily use my own curriculum to help develop college-ready writing skills. I also love helping students with preparing entrance essays for high school and college applications. I can also assist with other subjects as well. Spelling, grammar, and mechanics will be evaluated, with instruction and plenty of examples to help students learn from their own mistakes. Writing skills are further developed using the Socratic Method to add depth and build confidence! In my experience I find that often a student makes the same type of mistake in their writing until they are shown how it's wrong and what to do instead. When I see an area of ELA that the student is not yet proficient in, my goal is to explain it so that this skill gap is closed and the mistake is no longer made. I use the Socratic Method of asking questions about what's been written, pointing out areas where details aren't clear or are missing, and guiding the student to figure out what might need changing or adding to help improve the quality of their writing overall. However, I also believe strongly that children learn by example, and a huge part of how a student learns to write is by being shown how to do it first. Tutoring in both of these way leads to greatly improved writing ability and much more confident writers! Often a student 'hates 'writing because they find the process of taking a prompt and turning it into a well-organized paper to be overwhelming and arduous. Breaking down assignments into smaller steps and learning a few simple techniques can really help make the writing process easier. Everyone has the ability to write well, and being able to organize one's thoughts onto paper is a skill that, once learned, brings out the great writer in anyone!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been in education for over fifteen years as a teacher, tutor, and academic advisor. With excellent writing skills as a high school student, I often was called upon by my teachers to help my peers. This continued in college, as I offered my services to students needing help with their essays and research papers. I earned my BA in Feminist Studies from UC Santa Cruz where I worked as a Teaching Assistant and developed a peer review program to help fellow students with their college essays. Upon graduation, I went to work at a private college preparatory middle and high school where for fifteen years I worked with both American and International Students as both a teacher, writing tutor, and college advisor. Eventually I went on to become the director of the school, helping develop curriculum and preparing students for college.
I specialize in teaching college-ready writing skills, and believe that more learning happens when a student is enjoying what they are writing about. The goal with my classes and private tutoring is to ultimately prepare children for success both in college and as adults by empowering them with writing tools and skills, and nurturing their own ability to put their ideas and stories down on paper.
