Class Experience

This course is a place for the learner to grow and develop as a musician, whether they are just looking to enjoy playing music or have big goals they would like to achieve. We go at the learner's pace, celebrating every success and new growth. We cover fundamental techniques to develop a good tone and correct mechanics of playing, music theory and history to help aid in understanding of the music we're working on, and emphasize that everything we work on and practice is to ultimately make us effective artists, being able to communicate through our instruments. I'm a strong believer that no matter the level of playing, we are able to communicate the joy of music.

Each class will start with a warm up, where much of foundational technique is discussed. We will then move onto our method book of choice, and leave time to work on any music the learner may need help with for band class, or a solo piece we're working on.

With a healthy mindset focus, I am a highly inspirational teacher, celebrating small wins which eventually adds up to being a big growth. I approach areas that need improvement with curiosity, breaking down the problems into small steps, and keep an open mind that each individual is unique, offering various perspectives until the learner reaches that "ah ha!" moment.

I also emphasize that the learner become their own teacher - meaning they will be able to grow their listening skills to hear if what they are playing matches what they hope to achieve, and be able to apply the tools we discuss to meet their goals. I will frequently ask how they thought or felt about what they played, ask for their input, and we will discuss together how best to achieve their goals.

The learner and I will be interacting one-on-one for the entirety of the class, from playing, giving feedback, demonstrating, conversing, etc.
