Class Experience

During this class students will meet with the teacher once a week for face-to-face instruction in spelling patterns utilizing the "Word Sort" method that teaches students to examine words for how they look and sound to determine which spelling pattern to use. It helps them learn the spelling patterns used in English language, in a sequential program that begins as young as Kindergarten and goes through the college level. Students are placed based on ability level and move forward from there.

Students will receive direct instruction about a specific spelling pattern and then will be introduced to up to 25 words that will be sorted into a variety of categories. For example in a simple long a sort students would divide words into one of 3 categories: short vowel a, long vowel a_e (vowel, consonant, silent e) and oddballs (words that do not follow the pattern). They will sort their words with modeling from the teacher and support throughout the process.

They will have opportunities to ask questions, answer questions, and work directly with the teacher for the entire period. Class is structured as follow:

1. Introduction to symbols: short vowel, long vowel, sort pattern codes specific to what they are learning.
2. Introduction to sort pattern for the week with explanation of the pattern
3. After modeling how to set up the sorts and sorting 3 examples students will take over with guidance and help from teacher to sort their words. In multi student classes each students will have multiple turns to decide where words go.
4. At the end students will be prompted to make observations about the patterns and rules as well as ask questions or comment on that weeks sort.
5. At the end of class students will have a chance to ask any questions and receive help using the Spelling City app.

During the week students will be able to contact the teacher and receive support in areas of confusion or struggle.
