Class Experience
In this class, the dancer will work on individual corrections and technique related to personal improvements for Scottish Highland Dance. This is a private lesson, taught by a Champion highland dancer who has 16 years of teaching experience. Dancers do not need previous experience to take private lessons. The dancer will start by learning basic movements and positions, learn the highland fling, and then move onto the sword and Sean Triubhas. After that, National dances will be introduced. If your student has already taken Scottish Highland dance, I will modify the curriculum to match your student’s level.
Learning Goals
Students will work on highland, national and character dances. The dances they work on will depend on their age and developmental level and is at the discretion of the teacher.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Parents should supervise their students while they are dancing, as Scottish Highland dance is an athletic art form. If your child has asthma, use an inhaler as directed by doctor. Always have a water bottle for your child. We will have frequent water breaks.
Supply List
Water bottle, a clear, open space to dance, preferable hard wood floor. A chair or dance barre-chair works fine-no need to buy a dance barre if you don’t have one. Wear a t shirt or tank top and athletic shorts with hair pulled back.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi Everyone,
I’m Susan. I'm a Scottish Highland dance teacher. I started dancing at the age of 6.
I am a Scottish Highland dance teacher certified with the British Association Teachers of Dance. I began teaching at the age of 16 after passing the associates test with highly commended. I continued to take more teaching tests, until I received highly commended on my Fellows exam-the highest honor in teaching Scottish Highland dance.
I believe that it is SO important to focus on a child’s strengths, and to be positive. Children respond SO much better to positive feedback. There are so many new teaching strategies behind this, and I’m excited to use them. I always encourage children to reach their full potential and to have fun.
An interesting fact about me is that I placed 2nd at the US championships in Scottish Highland Dance when I was younger. In addition I was the Southeast Regional Champion several times, the Atlantic International Champion, The Carolinas Open Champion, and the Southern California Open Champion. I look forward to building Scottish Highland Dance classes for dancers over Outschool. I hope to eventually offer classes to all ages and levels.
